Ancient Rome Was Painted—So Why Is Blue So Rare?
One of Rome’s most striking colors was also its most difficult to make.
Ancient Rome wasn’t white.
It was painted in bold color.
But one color is almost missing.
Most people never notice it.
Once you do, you start seeing it everywhere.
Not because Romans didn’t like it—
but because it was expensive to make.
So most walls were red.
Blue only shows up in small details…
or in the homes of the wealthy.
Most people walk past this.
I don’t.
Walk through Pompeii and you’ll see it again and again—
walls still carrying that deep red tone.
Blue is different.
To make it, pigments had to be processed at high heat—
in controlled conditions.
More steps.
More cost.
So it was used carefully.
A border.
A figure.
A detail meant to stand out.
Red everywhere.
Blue—rare, deliberate.
Once you see it, you can’t unsee it.
If you like details like this, I write them several times a week. Most people walk past them. I don’t.

Blue is my favorite color. Little did I know as a child that I was so lucky to get my room painted blue!
